A Tobacco Free Island (IPH)

The TobaccoFree Research Institute attended a workshop entitled ‘A Tobacco Free Island– How are we doing?’ on the 14th June, 2016. This workshop was hosted by the Institute of Public Health in Ireland (IPH), and used an all-island approach to highlight the latest progress towards making the island tobacco free.

Speakers included: Prof Luke Clancy (Tobacco Free Research Institute Ireland), Dr Michael McBride (Department of Health- NI), Dr Fenton Howell (National Tobacco Control Advisor, DoH- RoI), Prof Gerard Hastings (Stirling University), Miriam Gunning (Tobacco Free Campus lead, HSE), Gerry Bleakney (Public Health Agency- NI) and Dr Helen McAvoy (IPH).

Professor Clancy spoke about the importance, historically and moving forward, of research demonstrating the effectiveness of tobacco control policies, particularly in light of the imminent introduction of Plain Packaging regulations: ‘Tobacco control research must provide the evidence base for interventions to help people stop smoking and live a longer healthier lives, free from disability. Our current research shows that Plain Packaging will help young people not to take up smoking. We urgently need to plan the studies necessary to monitor the effects of Plain Packaging on smoking in adults and children.’

The IPH launched their latest report, Smoke-free spaces on the island of Ireland - Snapshot Report 2016, which presents a brief overview of progress on the development of smoke-free spaces on the island of Ireland.
