Apheis (Air Pollution and Health: A European Information System)
released the latest findings in its ongoing assessment of the
impact of particulate air pollution on health in 26 cities in 12
European countries.
Ash Ireland
ASH Ireland is focused on reducing the impact of tobacco use in
Irish society. Just under 7,000 Irish citizens die each year from
the effects of tobacco related disease - and ASH Ireland is
determined to reduce this staggering statistic.

Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) was established in 1971
by the Royal College of Physicians. It is a campaigning public
health charity that works to eliminate the harm caused by
tobacco. We do not attack smokers or condemn smoking.
Asthma
Society
The Asthma Society of Ireland has a clearly defined role in
providing support services for people living with asthma. With over
470,000 people living with asthma in this country alone, we
actively engage with the general public, healthcare professionals,
the government, third party organisations and other stakeholders to
keep asthma high on the agenda.
ATS
The roots of the American Thoracic Society reach back to 1905,
when a small group of physicians decided that the best way to
improve care for tuberculosis patients was to share their
experiences and discoveries. Today, the ATS has grown into an
international society with more than 15,000 members.

Irish Cancer
Society
The mission of the Irish Cancer Society (Charity number
CHY5863), the national cancer care charity, is to play a vital role
in achieving world-class cancer services in Ireland, to ensure
fewer people get cancer and those that do have better outcomes. Our
goals are focused around prevention, early detection and fighting
cancer with three programme areas to achieve them; advocacy, cancer
services and research.

Foundation
The Irish Heart Foundation is the national charity fighting
stroke and heart disease, funded up to 90 per cent by public and
corporate donations.
Irish Thoracic Society
The Irish Thoracic Society (ITS) is the official society for the
broad spectrum of healthcare professionals involved in the care of
people with chronic or acute respiratory disease in Ireland.
Membership of the Society is drawn from respiratory physicians,
internal medicine physicians, paediatricians, thoracic surgeons,
general practitioners, junior doctors, nurses, physiotherapists,
pharmacists, dieticians, pulmonary function and respiratory
technicians, scientists and other healthcare providers who
specialise or have an interest in respiratory disease and care
throughout Ireland - North and South.
IUATLD
The mission of the International Union Against Tuberculosis and
Lung Disease (The Union) is to bring innovation, expertise,
solutions and support to address health challenges in low- and
middle-income populations.
OTC
In November 1999, the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Health and
Children published "A National Anti-Smoking Strategy - A Report on
Health and Smoking" which recommended that a national anti-tobacco
strategy be adopted in Ireland.
In response the Tobacco Free Policy Review Group was set up to
carry out a fundamental review of health and tobacco and make
recommendations to the Minister for Health and Children.
